(Experiment 4)
Vibrational Ground turns sound into vibrations felt through the body, in the physical form of an air pillow. Through these tactile sensations, we experience sound not simply as auditory, but as something felt through the entire body.
By physically listening, the materiality of sound is emphasised; this work aims to listen not only through
the ears, but using the body as well.
I used inflatable air column rolls instead of regular fabric as sound passes through air better - if I were to use sponge, or foam as a base, the sounds going through the pillow will barely be felt.
Ultimately, I used flat cardboard strips as a base to prevent the audio transducers from overheating due to trapped heat. The entire pillow consists of four air bag layers and four transducers, evenly distributed at
the centre.
Using strudel.cc to create low frequency sounds. The vibrations felt through the pillow feels stronger at frequencies of 200HZ or lower.
With the help of Claude *cough*, I managed to play some low frequency sounds through the pillow, generating subtle to extremely strong vibrations.
